Void Architect is a small studio working on houses, civic spaces and quiet interiors. We treat emptiness as a material, equal in weight to concrete and glass, and we let restraint do the talking.

Approach

Three principles, held to quietly.

We do not chase a house style. We chase a discipline. Each project begins with the same questions, and the answers are allowed to look entirely different.

  1. 01

    The void first

    We design the empty before the solid. Rooms, courtyards and thresholds are drawn as volumes of air, then the structure is set around them. Mass is what is left over.

  2. 02

    Light as structure

    A clerestory, a slot, a single deep reveal. We use daylight to mark hours and seasons, so a plain wall is never the same surface twice. Glazing is rationed, not lavished.

  3. 03

    Few materials, well

    Board-marked concrete, oiled oak, lime plaster, blackened steel. A short list, detailed without compromise, so the eye rests on proportion and joint rather than on variety.

The Studio

A small practice, deliberately kept that way.

Void Architect was founded in 2009 by Edda Marlowe and now runs as a studio of five. We take on a handful of commissions a year so that each one keeps the principal's hand on the drawing. We are not interested in volume. We are interested in getting the room right.

Our work spans private houses, modest civic buildings and the careful reworking of existing fabric. We draw by hand before we draw on screen, and we visit every site at least once in each season before a line is committed.

We are a remote-first studio. We meet by video, we travel to site when it matters, and we keep our overheads low so the budget goes into the building rather than the office.
